(Hahn 1881:133)<\/strong><\/p><div id=\"bgLayers_comp-k7293oos\" class=\"_3_wbk _2Hy-c\"><div id=\"bgMedia_comp-k7293oos\" class=\"_33YMf\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"uDbl1\">Theophilus Hahn, a nineteenth century philologist, linked the name &#8216;Haiseb&#8217; and this tree is the magnificent\u00a0Dawn-tree.&#8217; (Hahn 1881: 134).<\/p><p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span>Hahn&#8217;s\u00a0Dawn-tree\u00a0equates to the rising sun: \u00a0&#8216;beautiful beams and rays shooting up from a central point like the\u00a0gigantic branches of a magnificent tree&#8217;.<\/p><p class=\"font_7\">Hahn, like my recent contact Samson Awaseb,\u00a0determines\u00a0that Tsui ||goab and Haiseb are the same. As the sun rises in the East, they come from the East and\u00a0both are invoked as &#8216;Father&#8217; or\u00a0&#8216;All-Father&#8217;.<\/p><p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span>A link with wood and trees seems to run through \u00a0a number of\u00a0Haiseb tales. This link also seems evident in the\u00a0placing of branches and leaves \u00a0on Haiseb \u00a0graves, which was a common practice. It is mentioned, for instance, in the context of Gamkarab featured on the site.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"comp-k7293oso\" class=\"_1Z_nJ\" data-testid=\"richTextElement\"><p class=\"font_7\">At the very least Haiseb&#8217;s link with wood and trees seems to\u00a0reflect\u00a0a fundamental and powerful &#8216;going together quality&#8217; , if not absolute equivalence with Hahn&#8217;s\u00a0Dawn-tree.<\/p><p class=\"font_7\">As we tease out the meaning of Haiseb we should, however, resist trying to pin Haiseb&#8217;s identity down to specifics. Haiseb is about many things webbed around sun, rain, growth, life,\u00a0death, trees, food, safety, predictability, good living and danger.\u00a0Haiseb does not belong to any one persons&#8217;s or one group&#8217;s\u00a0ideas.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"comp-k7293oqm\" class=\"_1lRal\"><div class=\"_2iB5S\">Among the Haiseb tales I recorded in Sesfontein was one that typically remaps and reconfigures familiar themes. Later on the women try and pull Haiseb into he river, but Haiseb realises that they are trying to kill him.<\/p><p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span>So the women dance closer to the river but Haiseb is careful. Haiseb thinks, &#8220;how can I get these ladies into the river&#8221;. He takes the sun in his hat, the stars on his cheeks, moon on his bottom, now when he dances around the ladies are blinded and he tries to get the group together. Then he pulls all the ladies into the river.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span>When Haiseb pulled the ladies, two held onto the roots of a tree. That day the ladies became the baboons. There is some place in Franzfontein where the ladies became the baboons. The God made all these [things?]. That sign [of the things god made] is sometimes there.<\/p><p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"wixGuard\">\u200b<\/span>In Franzfontein there was a tree that looked like a woman and the local people burned it.
